West Chicago Garden Club

What's New at our web site?

As we update our site and add new information, we will let you know about it here.  If you visit us here after having been away for awhile, this is a good place to start to find out what changed while you were gone.  This is also a good place to find out the latest "announcements" and events for our club.

August 2006

We now have back issues of all the 2005 newsletters and all of the 2006 newsletters through August.  Our Information Director, Edie Streams, has resigned.  She is moving to Nashville soon.  Sandy Saad has kindly agreed to take the position and is now in charge of our monthly newsletter.

March 2006

The January newsletter is now online (under Who We Are - near the bottom of the page).  We will try and put all of them up this year as we have them available.  The flyer for this year's Plant Sale is available as a PDF here.  It is 2 pages - the first page is in English and the second page is in Spanish.

January 2006

Our calendar for this year is now online.  We are planning to put some of the newsletters on this website this year.  Plans are already underway for our May 20th Plant Sale and our June 24th Garden Walk.  More information on the Garden Walk will be here soon.

May 2005

We had another very successful plant sale this year!  Thank you to all of our members who volunteered - with all of your help, this was one of our best sales ever.

The current calendar is now on the website (we thought it was up this spring, but it seems to have disappeared!)  Remember, that we have a big field trip coming up on June 25th.  We will be renting a large van or bus to take us all out to Rockford to the Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Klem Arboretum.

The Kruse House Garden is doing very well this year.  We have had some very dedicated members who have adopted areas of the garden and are taking very good care of their areas!

The club has voted and agreed to have another Garden & Porch walk in June of 2006.  We are starting to look for Gardens and Porches now and would love to have any suggestions you would like to send us.  Email us at pdarrah@sprynet.com.

February 2004

We have started updating the site for our new year.  The Calendar has many of our speakers and events listed.  We are putting together information on our Plant Sale which will be here soon.  Keep the date in mind:  May 15th

There will be a few new committees this year.  We are going to ask the Community Service committee to come up with ideas of how to spend/donate some of our savings.  The club has been quite successful for the last few years!  There will also be an updated committee to lead our renovation of the Kruse House Garden.  Another committee is being formed to plan and organize our "Sunflower Project" where local kids will grow Sunflowers.  More information about all of these will be on our website once we are more organized.

June 2003

Our Garden Walk was a great success!  Over 200 people visited the gardens & porches.

June 21st, 2003

See our Garden Walk page for more information.

May 2003

Once again, we had beautiful weather for our Plant Sale.  The Sale was a success and we all had a great time.

January 2003

We have started updating the site for our new year.  The Calendar has most of our speakers and events listed.  We are putting together information on our Plant Sale and Garden Walk which will be here soon.  Keep those two dates in mind:  May 17th for the Plant Sale and June 21st for the Garden Walk

June 2002

The Kruse House Garden is looking great this year.  If you missed the May meeting that we held at Kruse House, try and find some time to stop by and visit the garden on your own.

May 2002

Our Plant Sale was a great success.  The shrubs were all sold by 9:10AM!  Many thanks to all the volunteers who potted up seedlings, baby-sat trays of plants, dug up and donated their perennials and helped transport and sell plants the day of the sale.  If anyone has any suggestions for improving next years sale, please let us know.

February 2002

We have set up a new service for contacting all of our members on the phone.  It is called Calling Post and is a service that allows us to record a message and have it delivered to all of our members inexpensively.  As our membership has grown, it has become very difficult to call everyone when we need to request volunteers or remind about an event.  This service will call every member and deliver the message we record.  It will only call between 9:00am and 9:00pm.  Occasionally, there may be an advertisement after our recorded message - this is partly how the service is funded.  We pay only 5¢ per call so we can reach our entire membership for under $5.00!

January 2002

We are starting a new year!  We held elections in November and now have a few new faces on our board.  They have planned a great year for us.  There are interesting speakers scheduled for our meetings and a couple of workshops where we can try new hands-on projects.  Take a look at the calendar to see all the scheduled plans.

Our Plant Sale Committee has started planning and our sale will be held on May 18th.  There will be a couple of Potting Parties to plant small annuals and perennials seedlings into larger pots.  Any members who would like to volunteer to help at the potting parties or would like to "babysit" the seedlings afterwards should contact Jim Hilsenbeck.  We will also need volunteers for the day of the sale.

We have changed the location of our meetings for 2002.  We were outgrowing the Fox Center and having some difficulty with scheduling.  Our board looked at several locations and decided that the First Congregational Church has a good space for us.  All of our indoor meetings will be held there.  During the summer, we will again have some of the meetings in our member's gardens.  The Plant Sale will still be held in front of the Fox Center.

July 2001

Take a look at the Cool Stuff page - several new links have been added.

Both of our field trips this summer have been very successful.  We visited a peony garden in June and the Chicago Botanic Garden in July.  The trip to the Botanic Garden was in conjunction with the West Chicago Park District.  We all rode together on the Park District bus which was a nice way to get to the garden.  Everyone had a couple of hours to explore and then we all took the Garden's tram tour.  Everyone enjoyed the trip!  For some photographs from the trip, click here.

May 2001

Our Plant Sale was a great success!  Once again, the West Chicago is Blooming festival was held at the same time and there was a great turn-out for both events.  This was our first year hosting a Garden Fair along with our plant sale and the vendors that participated seemed to feel that it went quite well for a first-time event.

PLEASE NOTE: Our June meeting will be held on SUNDAY, June 24th!
